Tigers Win Three of Four Versus Southern Union
The Marion Military Institute baseball team defeated the Bisons of Southern Union State Community College three out of four games to take last weekend's ACCC North series. The three wins improved the Tigers overall record to 21-15 with a 12-8 record in the ACCC North. Marion will face Shelton State CC this week in another four games series in the ACCC North Division. Thursday's doubleheader will be held at Shelton State with a return date in Marion scheduled for Saturday, April 20th.
Game 1: MMI 14 SUSCC 4
MMI took an early 5-0 lead after the first inning before SUSCC added two runs of their own in the top half of the third inning. The Tigers answered back in their next at-bat with three runs to take an 8-2 lead. The Bisons added two more runs in the fifth inning but Marion rallied with three runs in both the fifth and sixth innings to take the run-ruled victory. Freshman Jax Morris earned the win from the mound with Jenson Barker seeing action in relief.
Matthew Marfice led Marion's offensive attack with three hits in five official at-bats. He finished with a double and a team leading five RBI. Samuel Clement and Nicholas Davis each went 2-for-2 with a run scored. Davis added 2 RBI while Clement finished with one RBI. Also getting hits for MMI were: David Sweat, Devne Daniel, Michael Rich, Duncan McReath, and Weston Ball.
Game 2: MMI 6 SUSCC 4
Sophomores Matthew Marfice and Samuel Clement led Marion at the plate with two hits apiece in the second game Thursday afternoon, leading to a day one sweep of the Bisons. Marfice had a double, an RBI and scored twice for the Tigers. Seth Shadix went 1-for-3 with a three-run blast to deep left field. David Sweat, Devne Daniel, and Weston Ball also tallied hits for Marion. Sophomore Riley Spearman earned the win after relieving freshman Michael Pittmon. In five innings of work, Spearman gave up one hit, one run, and two walks with two strikeouts.
Game 3: MMI 8 SUSCC 3
Marion made it three straight wins over the Bisons when sophomore hurler Marquez Oates recorded another win from the mound, his eighth of the spring. He gave up five hits, three runs (one earned) and three walks with eight strikeouts in seven innings. Duncan McReath went a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate with an RBI and two runs scored. Sophomore catcher Samuel Clement finished with three hits in four at-bats. He had a homerun, scored three runs, and added two RBI. Matthew Marfice went 2-for-4 with a double and two runs scored. Drew Mercier, David Sweat, Devne Daniel, Michael Rich, and Nicholas Davis also had hits for Marion in the win to clinch the series.
Game 4: MMI 4 SUSCC 5
Marion lost the final game of series as their seventh inning three-run rally came up short. Matthew Marfice continued his hot bat with a 3-for-3 performance. He also scored two of MMI's runs. Michael Rich went 2-for-3 and Duncan McReath added two hits in four at-bats. Drew Mercier went 1-for-1 with two walks. Seth Shadix added a homerun with two RBI. Seeing action on the mound were Nathan Colegrove, Bradley Brown, Coleton Barnes and Garrett Ellis.
