Lady Tigers Sweep Singles and Doubles Play at John McWilliams Invitational

Montgomery, AL—The Lady Tigers took to the courts at Lagoon Park to participate in the John McWilliams Invitational, which was hosted by Huntingdon College on Friday, September 13 and Saturday, September 14.  Point University, Oglethorpe University, and LaGrange College rounded out the tennis squads participating in the two-day event.  The Lady Tigers' two doubles tandems went undefeated in the event, and the Lady Tigers won all three singles draws.

The Lady Tigers had two entries in the A draw doubles competition—Anna Waller/Kitty Greenwalt and Ksenia Vasilyev/Kathryn Risner.  Waller and Greenwalt tallied wins over Huntingdon College (8-0), Point University (8-4), and Huntingdon College (8-4), while Vasilyev and Risner recorded wins over LaGrange College (8-2), Oglethorpe University (8-5), and Huntingdon College (8-1).

"I thought, on the whole, the girls played very well," said coach Wright, "especially when you take into account the fact that this is the first time that each doubles unit competed together.  I was really pleased with the chemistry of each of the teams.  And I was also pleased that both teams in tight matches were able to pull away and close out the matches down the stretch."

In A draw singles action, Vasilyev downed players from LaGrange College (6-3, 6-0), Oglethorpe University (6-3, 7-5), and Point University (6-4, 6-4).  Anna Waller, meanwhile, won her opening-round match against Oglethorpe University, 6-2, 6-0, and then lost to Point University, 6-4, 2-6, 10-7.

Greenwalt scored three wins in the B draw, downing LaGrange College (6-2, 6-0), Oglethorpe University (6-1, 6-3), and Oglethorpe University (6-4, 6-1).

In the C draw, Risner rose to the occasion and claimed singles victories over Huntingdon College (6-2, 6-2), LaGrange College (6-0, 6-1), and Point University (4-6, 6-2, 10-3).

"I was very proud of the girls this weekend," Wright said.  "All four girls were down in matches and didn't give up.  They all fought back from deficits.  Anna lost the first set to Point and then won the second set, 6-2; Ksenia was down 4-1 in the second set in the finals and then reeled off five straight games to take that set, 6-4; Kitty dropped the first three games of the first set and stormed back to win that set, 6-4; and Kathryn lost the first set, 6-4, and won the last two sets, 6-2 and 10-3."

The Lady Tigers now head to the University of Montevallo to play a scrimmage match on Friday, September 20.  The match has a start time of 2:00 p.m.
