Women’s Tennis Picks Up Three First-Round Wins in UWA’s USTA Campus Singles Challenge

Livingston, AL—The Lady Tigers' Karen Yan, Rebecca Lin, and Makenzie Ralston scored lopsided opening-round wins at the USTA Campus Singles Challenge, which was held at the University of West Alabama's Vaughan Tennis Center on Sunday. The field included a number of independent players and players from Marion Military Institute (MMI), East Central Community College (ECCC), Meridian Community College (MCC), and the University of West Alabama (UWA).
Yan defeated ECCC's Sara Mazella, 6-0; Lin handled ECCC's Julia Johnston, 6-1; and Ralston downed ECCC's Madison Crapps, 6-0. In her first tennis match ever, the Tigers' Madison Schmidt lost to ECCC's Alex Tindal, 6-1.

Lin polished off two more East Central players (Madison Crapps [6-0] and Bethany Wellerman [6-2]) before losing to UWA's Lila Aranez, 6-0.

Yan blasted ECCC's Tatiana Quinonez, 6-0, before being bested by UWA's Evelyn Moreno, 6-4.

Ralston took a beating from UWA's Moreno, 6-0, but held her own against ECCC's Gabriela Gomez, losing a close set, 6-5 (5).

The Lady Tigers will now head to Meridian, MS, for a Wednesday afternoon match with the Lady Eagles of Meridian Community College. Match time is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. at the Northeast Tennis Center on September 13.
