MMI’s Fedele and Kempf Star in Loss to Meridian Lady Eagles

Marion, AL—Marion Military Institute's women's tennis team suffered a 7-2 loss on Monday afternoon to the visiting Lady Eagles of Meridian Community College, but two Tiger stars shone brightly—Stella Fedele and Alex Kempf.

Stella Fedele, MMI's hard-hitting and hard-charging singles sensation, plowed through the Lady Eagles' No. 1 player, 6-1, 6-0, in blustery conditions.  Fedele's excellent shot-making skills were more of a force of nature than the gale-force winds that plagued play all afternoon.  Pummeling ball after ball, Fedele blew through her opposition.

Alex Kempf started off quickly at No. 2 singles, winning the first set handily, 6-1, but then let up in the second set.  Meridian's Shelby Zachary forced a second-set tiebreaker, which Kempf won, 7-5.

"I thought Fedele played outstanding tennis today," head tennis coach Charles Wright said, "and Kempf played solid, if not spectacular, tennis.  Kempf came up big in the latter stages of the second-set tiebreaker to squeeze out her point.  And Victoria Johnson—I thought she played a very nice match today as well."

The Lady Tigers travel to East Central Community College in Decatur, MS, on Friday, February 12 for a 1:00 p.m. match.
