Conway Tabbed ACCC MVP; Conway and Cespedes Cap Off Perfect Spring Season with ACCC Singles and Doubles Championships

Decatur, AL—It has been a spring season to remember for freshman tennis sensation Carlee Conway (No. 1 singles) and sophomore Maria Cespedes (No. 2 singles).  Both young ladies capped off a perfect tennis season in singles and doubles by winning their respective singles flights at the Alabama Community College Conference Tennis Tournament on Saturday morning at the Jimmy Johns Tennis Center in Point Mallard Park and then returning in the afternoon to capture the First Flight Doubles Championship.

But Conway had one more much-deserved piece of sporting hardware to pick up before she left the Jimmy Johns Tennis Center on Saturday:  the Alabama Community College Conference Most Valuable Player Award.  Conway is only the second female player from MMI to receive this prestigious award.  Former Lady Tiger great Rachel Rossi was a two-time recipient of the award in 2009 and 2010.

Conway dismantled Snead State's Rachel Farmer, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 1 singles to punctuate, with an exclamation point, her exceptional year of tennis at MMI.  With wins over Huntingdon College, Stillman College, and the University of Mobile, Conway finished the spring season with an unblemished 13-0 singles record.

Cespedes downed Snead State's Amanda Bertoldi, 6-2, 6-4, at No. 2 singles.  With the win, Cespedes improved her singles record to 13-0 on the year.

In doubles, Conway and Cespedes rolled through the finals, defeating the Gadsden State duo of Farmer and Bertoldi, 8-2.  Conway and Cespedes finished the season with a perfect 12-0 mark at No. 1 doubles.

"Conway and Cespedes played at an extraordinarily high level all year long," Coach Wright said.  "Both players are tenacious battlers on the court, and both players represented MMI well.  Conway is in a league of her own, though.  She is the most versatile female player that has ever played tennis for MMI.  She can do it all.  Cespedes is a baseline brawler; she plasters the ball on almost every shot.  The two of them are great competitors.  We were blessed to have them on our team."
