Conway Falls to Eventual JUCO Women’s Singles Champion at National Tournament

Sumter, SC—Carleen Conway, MMI's No. 1 singles player, fell to the No. 3-seeded player and eventual JUCO women's singles champion, Joanna Savva of Tyler Junior College, 7-6 (3), 6-3, on Thursday morning at the Palmetto Tennis Center.  The match was one of the best-played women's singles matches on the first day of competition in the 2014 USTA/ITA National Small College Championships.

Conway played her best tennis of the tournament, going toe-to-toe with the savvy Savva from the baseline.  Conway and Savva traded blistering forehand and backhand drives.  With the match tied at 6-all, Savva came up big in the first-set tiebreaker to win seven of the ten points played.

"That match was by far Carlee's best tennis of the tournament," Coach Wright said.  "She played some inspired tennis but was unable to cash in some of the big points in the tiebreaker and in the second set.  The match very well could have gone either way.  All in all, though, it was a tremendous effort by Carlee to hang in there against one of the top JUCO players in the nation."

Conway went on to defeat Leticia Dos Santos from the College of the Desert, 6-1, 5-7, 6-4, before falling to another player from Tyler Junior College in her last match of the tournament.
