MMI’s Conway and Cespedes Capture USTA/ITA JUCO Women’s Doubles Title

Meridian, MS—Marion Military Institute's Carlee Conway and Maria Cespedes, the No. 1-seeded women's doubles team in the USTA/ITA JUCO Southern Regional Championships, captured the women's doubles crown on Saturday morning at the Northeast Tennis Center.  The MMI pair broke open a close 5-4 contest by winning three straight games to close out the match, 8-4.

Earlier in the tournament, Conway and Cespedes received a first-round bye and then cruised to lopsided wins over Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College (8-3) and Itawamba Community College (8-1).

"Even though Carlee and Maria probably played their best tennis in their semifinal match (an impressive win over Itawamba's Taylor Patterson and Ivy Robbins), they played just well enough in the crucial moments of the final match to win the title," said Charles Wright, MMI's men's and women's tennis coach.

Conway and Cespedes are now eligible to participate in the 2014 USTA/ITA National Small College Championships in Sumter, SC.  Match play begins on Thursday, Oct. 9 and continues through Sunday, Oct. 12 at the Palmetto Tennis Center.
