Lady Tigers Earn Split at Home versus Hinds

Marion, AL. – After dropping game one against Hinds Community College, the Lady Tigers rebounded to take game two and secure a doubleheader split. MMI will host Southern Union State Community College Thursday, February 29 with game one scheduled to start at 12:00 p.m.

Game 1: MMI 7 HCC 9

Marion scored in their first at-bat to take an early 2-0 lead. Emily Mackin walked and scored off a single by Alexandra Erwin. A double by Krislin Estes scored Erwin. MMI's lead did not last long as Hinds tied the game in the top of the second inning.

The Lady Tigers took back the lead, 3-2, in the bottom of the third inning. Karlee Pierson singled and stole second to get into scoring position. Estes singled to left field, allowing Pierson to score.

HCC tied the game in the fifth inning and then took the lead, 4-3, in the top of the sixth inning. Marion took the lead back, 5-4, in the bottom of that inning when Estes doubled to lead their at-bat. Katie Robbins sacrificed Kendal Rhodes (pinch runner) to third base. Jaqulyn Braswell blasted a two-run homerun over left field fence.

With Marion holding a one run lead into the seventh inning, Hinds' batters earned four walks and a grand slam to give them the lead back, 9-5. The Tigers scored two runs off an Avary Lumpkin homerun but could not put together another rally, taking the game one loss.

Krislin Estes led Marion at the plate, going 4-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored. Jaqulyn Barswell finished 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored. Also getting hits were Alexandra Erwin (1-for-3, R, BB), Karlee Pierson (1-for-4, R), and Avary Lumpkin (1-for-4 2RBI, R).

Ashley Maddox started in the circle for MMI and was relieved by Jaylee Crow who took the loss. Also seeing action for the Lady Tigers was Maia Harris.

Game 2: MMI 11 HCC 3 (6 innings)

Taylor Bailey earned the start in the circle for game two and was relieved by Gracyn Clifton who earned the victory. Also seeing action was Katelyn Rhodes, Michaela Otts and Jaylee Crow.

HCC scored runs in the second and third innings to take an early 2-0 lead. MMI tied the game in the bottom of the fourth inning. Karlee Pierson was hit by a pitch and Avary Lumpkin basted a homerun over centerfield.

After Hinds scored a run in the fifth inning Marion plated four runs in their turn at the plate. Emily Mackin singled with two outs. Alexandra Erwin reached on an error, allowing Mackin to score. Karlee Pierson singled and Lumpkin doubled to right centerfield to add a run to the scoreboard. Krislin Estes continued her hot bat with a single, scoring two more runs for Marion.

After HCC remained scoreless in the top of the sixth inning, Jaqulyn Braswell singled to left field in the bottom half of the inning. Kendal Rhodes walked. Erwin singled, scoring Braswell; Rhodes moved to third and Erwin advanced to second on the throw to third base. Pierson doubled to plate two more runs, and advanced to third base on an errant throw. Lumpkin ended the game early on another homerun, her third of the day, scoring the final two runs.

Avary Lumpkin finished 3-for-4 at the plate with two homeruns, a double and three runs scored. Krislin Estes followed her 4-for-4 performance in game one with three hits in three plate appearances, adding two more RBI to her stats line.
