Softball Sweeps Holmes CC in Home Doubleheader

Marion, AL. - The MMI Lady Tigers softball team swept the Bulldogs of Holmes Community College Saturday afternoon to improve to 16-9.

Game 1: MMI 5 Holmes CC 1

With both teams being held scoreless in the first inning of game one, MMI plated three runs in the bottom of the second inning to take a 3-0 advantage.  Madison Bubel led the inning with a double.  Alexis Paredes doubled to score the game's first run.  Bailee Butler tripled to right field; Paredes scored easily.  Hope Owens bunted to bring Butler across the plate.  

The score stayed 3-0 until Marion scored one run in the fifth inning.  Bailie Seales hit a one out double and then stole third base.  Nichole Martinez hit a sacrifice fly to the outfield to bring in Seales. 

The Lady Tigers added another run in the sixth inning when Bubel led off with a base hit up the middle.  Paredes and Butler both walked and an Owens' fielders choice scored MMI's last run of the game.  Holmes scored their lone run in the top of the seventh inning. 

Freshman Kamryn Murdock pitched a complete seven inning game.  She allowed one run, five hits, and four walks while striking out four batters.

Madison Bubel went 2-for-3 with a run scored.  Bailie Seales, Maris Stinchcomb, Alexis Paredes, Bailee Butler, and Morgan Dennis also collected hits in the win.

Game Two: MMI 6 Holmes CC 4

Freshman Mackenzie Calhoun started in the circle for Marion in game two of Saturday's doubleheader and was relieved by another freshman, Katelyn Holcombe, who earned the win.  After 5.2 innings of work, she allowed one hit, no runs, and no walks with four strikeouts.

Holmes CC jumped up 1-0 in the top of the first inning before the Lady Tigers added four runs in their first at-bat to take a 4-1 lead.  Bailie Seales led off with a base hit up the middle and Nichole Martinez reached on an error.  Maris Stinchcomb followed with a hit and a fielder's choice by Madison Bubel scored Seales.  Alexis Paredes and Bailee Butler hit back-to-back base hits which added two more runs for Marion.  Hope Owens earned an RBI in her first at-bat to plate the home team's fourth run.

The Bulldogs added three runs in the second inning to tie the game at four runs apiece.  The score remained tied until the bottom of the sixth inning.  Paredes led off with a walk for MMI.  Abigale Williams ran for Paredes and Bailee Butler doubled to score her.  Brianna Ashcraft sacrificed the runner to third and another bunt by Hope Owens scored the run.  

Holcombe was able to shut down the Bulldogs' batters in their last at-bat to secure the victory for Marion.  Bailie Seales and Bailee Butler both recorded two hits.  Butler added three RBI.  Maris Stinchcomb went 1-for-3 while Alexis Paredes, Morgan Dennis, and Hope Owens all finished with one hit in two plate appearances.  Paredes scored twice and earned a walk; Owens added two RBI.
