Softball Sweeps Southern Union at Home

Marion, AL. - The MMI Lady Tigers earned two more wins in the ACCC North Tuesday afternoon, defeating the Lady Bisons of Southern Union State Community College 9-1 and 4-2.

Game 1: MMI 9 SUSCC 1

Sophomore Whitney Edgecomb scored Marion's first run after leading off the game with a walk.  Dalton Merrill sacrificed her to second and Morgan Gaither doubled to bring home Edgecomb.  After Southern Union tied the game in the next inning 1-1, the Lady Tigers added six runs in the bottom half of the inning.  Jaina Walden started the rally with a base hit.  Braedyn Ward and Kameron Hunt followed with base hits, and right fielder Taylor Mitchell hit a double down the right field line to score Walden and Ward.  With two outs Gaither drew a walk and Madison Bubel brought in Hunt on a base hit; Gaither moved to third.  Gaither scored on a hit by Kylie Bolton; Bubel moved to third.  Jaina Walden recorded her second hit of the inning and scored Bubel.  MMI held a 7-1 lead after two innings.

Taylor Mitchell found first base in the third inning after being hit by a pitch.  Dalton Merrill got an infield single to move Mitchell into scoring position. Mitchell scored during Gaither's next at-bat.

MMI added another run in the fourth inning after sophomore second baseman, Jaina Walden, earned a walk.  Ward sacrificed her to second and Mitchell recorded her second double, allowing Walden to score.

With her team up 9-1, sophomore Lexi McCray shut down the Lady Bison bats in the fifth inning to secure her eleventh win of the spring.  In five innings, McCray gave up eight hits, one run and a walk, while striking out three batters.

Game 2: MMI 4 SUSCC 2

The SUSCC hitters jumped on sophomore Alex Reed in the first inning of game two, plating two runs for an early 2-0 lead.  Reed was able to settle down and stopped the visitors from Wadley, Alabama from scoring again in the game.  Reed recorded the win, her ninth of the spring season.

Marion scored one run in the third inning to cut the lead to 2-1.  Kameron Hunt got a hit and was brought around to score off a double by Whitney Edgecomb.  The Lady Tigers added three more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to take a two-run advantage.  Morgan Gaither and Madison Bubel led the inning off with back-to-back hits. Bolton sacrificed the runners into scoring position and Jaina Walden reached on an error, scoring Gaither and Bubel. Hunt recorded her second hit of the game bringing in Walden.

The Lady Bisons tried to put together a two-out rally in the top of the seventh inning.  With the bases loaded Alex Reed got the SUSCC batter to hit to short stop Morgan Gaither, who recorded the last out of the game.

MMI will travel to Calhoun CC Saturday for another ACCC North doubleheader.  The first game is scheduled to start at 1:00 p.m.
