Lady Tigers Start 2018 Season 2-2 After First Road Trip
The Marion Military Institute softball team started the 2018 season with a four game road trip at Copiah Lincoln Community College (MS). The Lady Tigers dropped the first two games of the trip; a 5-0 decision to Baton Rouge Community College and a 8-7 defeat to the host team.
Day two of the trip saw Marion rebound with two wins to even their record to 2-2. In the first game against Copiah Lincoln CC, the home team took an early 2-0 lead in the first inning. MMI rebounded with 4 runs in the top of the second inning to take their first lead. Copiah returned the favor in the bottom half of that inning, scoring two more runs and tying the game, 4-4. The Co-Lin Wolfpack added one more run in the third inning while the Lady Tigers added three in the third, two in the fourth and five in the seventh inning (14-5). Morgan Gaither and Danielle Phillips each collected two hits in the win. Gaither had a double, scored a run and recorded two RBIs while Phillips scored twice and was walked once. Alex Reed, Jaina Walden, Lexi McCray, Anna Claire Gresham, and Whitney Edgecomb each had a hit for MMI. Bryndi-Alyn Ward got the win for Marion.
MMI defeated Co-Lin 11-10 in the final game. Jaina Walden and Morgan Gaither led Marion at the plate, each finishing with four hits. Walden had a double and a homerun in five at-bats, scored three runs and recorded one RBI. Gaither blasted a homerun, scored three times and finished with 4 RBIs. Yasmin Cottingham went 2-for-3 with two walks and three runs scored. Taylor Mitchell had two hits on four at-bats. Also collecting hits for Marion were: Lexi McCray, Dalton Merrill, Danielle Phillips, and Anna Claire Gresham. Gresham recorded her first win in the circle, throwing seven innings. Alex Reed got the save, working two innings in relief.
MMI will host East Mississippi Community College Tuesday, February 6, with first pitch scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
