Softball Begins 2017 Season 3-1

The Marion Military Institute Lady Tigers' softball team started the 2017 season with three wins in four games.

Marion earned two wins at Alabama Southern Community College Friday afternoon, defeating the Lady Eagles 12-5 and 12-6. In game one Danielle Phillips led the offense, going 3-for-4 with a homerun.  She scored twice and recorded six RBI's.  Kirsten Borden had two hits, including a double, on four attempts.  She scored twice and recorded two RBI's.  Lexie Green scored three runs, earning three walks to reach base.  Amanda Ingram, Marion's winning pitcher, scored twice with one RBI.  Yasmin Cottingham and Megan Dockery both went 1-for-4 at the plate with Cottingham hitting a homerun.

In game two, Kaci Cochran and Amanda Ingram both finished hitting perfect at the plate.  Cochran went 3-for-3 with a double and triple.  She scored once and recorded one RBI.  Ingram went 4-for-4 with a double and a homerun.  She had 5 RBI's and scored twice.  Borden and Green both finished with two hits on four attempts.  Borden scored twice; Green scored three times and had two RBI's. Danielle Phillips, Yasmin Cottingham, Megan Dockery, and Ashlyn Mangum each collected a hit for MMI.  Abbigail Elrod scored twice, reaching base twice on walks.  Freshman Bryndi-Alyn Ward earned the win for the Lady Tigers.

The Lady Tigers dropped the first game of a doubleheader at Lurleen B. Wallace Community College, 7-8, but rebounded with a convincing 15-9 win in game two.  In game one Amanda Ingram and Yasmin Cottingham each went 2-for-4 from the plate.  Ingram scored three times while Cottingham crossed the plate once with one RBI.  Kirsten Borden, Lexie Green, Danielle Phillips, Megan Dockery, and Abbigail Elrod all had hits for Marion.  Phillips recorded a homerun while Green and Cottingham each had a double.  Ingram took the loss in the circle.

In game two, Danielle Phillips exploded at the plate with two homeruns while scoring four times with five RBI's. Megan Dockery went 2-for-5 with a homerun.  She scored three runs for Marion.  Kirsten Borden, Lexie Green, Amanda Ingram, Ashlyn Mangum, and winning pitcher Bryndi-Alyn Ward also had a hit. 

MMI will travel to Holmes Community College this Saturday to face Southwest Mississippi Community College at 1:00 p.m. and Holmes CC at 3:00 p.m.
