Conference Struggles Continue for Lady Tigers

DECATUR, AL- Marion Military Institute broke out of its batting slump, but it was not enough to avoid doubleheader setback as Calhoun Community College recorded 3-0 and 13-5 victories here Tuesday.

After outhitting Calhoun in the opener even though being held scoreless, the Lady Tigers erupted for five runs in the nightcap only to drop the second game.

"We finally began hitting the ball like we did earlier in the season," head coach Kristi Basso said. "However, we can't put together a complete doubleheader.  Our defense really let us down in today's games."

In the opener Marion outhit Calhoun 7-4 but the winners scratched out enough runs to claim the victory.

Emily Tarango had two hits to lead the Lady Tiger attack and losing hurler Kalynn Allen scattered four hits, but it wasn't enough.  MMI missed several chances to score as Tarango and Taylor Anderson singled in the third only to be stranded and had a golden opportunity wasted in the sixth as Allen singled and Ashley Strength doubled only to fall short of scoring.

MMI struck quickly in the nightcap, scoring in the opening inning as Ashley Soos doubled, Anderson walked and Allen singled before Strength singled in a run. However, the rally stopped there.

Calhoun tied the game in its first at bat and broke the game wide open with a six-run second.  The Lady Tigers scored again when Allen reached first on a missed third strike and Strength followed with a two-run homer.

The Lady Tigers closed the gap to 7-5 with two more in the fifth as Annelise Borg singled, Soos walked, Tarango singled and Anderson drove in two with a double.  However, Calhoun rallied with three runs in each of its next two at bats to close out the game.

Strength had two hits, including the homer, and three runs batted in to lead the Lady Tigers 7-hit attack.
