Lady Tigers Sweep Judson in Doubleheader

MARION, AL –The Marion Military Institute Lady Tigers roared at the plate Thursday, banging out 32 hits in sweeping a doubleheader from Judson College by 11-2 and 14-1 scores.

Lauren Camacho pitched complete games on both ends of the abbreviated twinbill to pick up the victories, the first for head coach Kristi Basso.

Ashley Soos once again led the offensive charge for the Lady Tigers, now 2-2 on the season, slapping out six hits in the two games.  Athena Sayrie and Emily Tarango each had five hits.

The Lady Tigers jumped to an early lead in the opener and never trailed, pulling away at the end.  Soos tripled in the first inning and scored on Ashley Strength's single to get MMI started.  After Judson scored a run to tie the game, the Lady Tigers pulled ahead to stay in the second. Andie Lopez singled to open the inning and scored on Tarango's triple. Tarango scored on Sayrie's bunt.

MMI broke open the game in the fourth as Lopez walked, and Tarango and Sayrie followed with singles to load the bases. After Soos chased in one with a single, Strength cleared the bases with a three-run triple and scored on Taylor Miner's RBI grounder.  MMI ended it with scoring in the fifth as Tarango singled and scored on Sayrie's triple. Sayrie crossed the plate on Soos' infield grounder.

Camacho pitched five innings, walking none and fanning two while scattering five hits. Tarango had three hits while Sayrie, Soos and Strength each had two with Strength driving in four runs.

The MMI bats got even hotter in the cold weather in the second game, producing a season high 19 hits en route to the one-sided 14-1 win.

The Lady Tigers put the game away early in the nightcap, scoring 10 runs in the first three innings. Soos continued her hot bat with four hits to lead the 19-hit attack. Taylor Anderson and Sayrie had three hits each while Strength, Miner and Tarango each chipped in with two.

Sayrie, Soos and Strength opened the game with consecutive singles and Anderson brought home two with a double.  A five-run second included a two-run triple by Strength and Rachel Gauspohl's run-scoring double. A three-run third included four doubles by Tarango, Sayrie, Soos and Miner.

The Lady Tigers completed their scoring with a four-run outburst in the fifth started by a Soos triple. Kalynn Allen and Jessica Lingelback added run-scoring doubles in the frame.

Camacho again threw a complete game, scattering five hits waking one and fanning six.

"We hit the ball really well today, especially with runners in scoring position," Basso said.  "Camacho threw strikes and we played good defense behind her. "

MMI travels to Holmes Community College Saturday before returning home to host East Mississippi Community College Tuesday.
