MMI Nips the Bears, 4-3, and Falls to the Hawks, 7-2, in Men’s Tennis
Montgomery, AL—The MMI Tigers split their two matches on Saturday at the George S. Gibbs Tennis Center, clipping the Bears of Bevill State Community College, 4-3, in the first match and losing 7-2 to the Huntingdon University Hawks in the nightcap.
The Tigers split two 8-5 decisions against the Bears in the doubles contests, with Bernard Smith and Connor Pointer picking up the MMI point. Dylan Turnbull, Bernard Smith, and Nathanael Gilkes won three singles matches for the Tigers to close out the win. Connor Pointer and Aiden Mendenhall also competed well but came up short in their matches
Against the Hawks, the Tigers, due to an incomplete lineup, had to default matches at No. 6 singles and No. 3 doubles to start the match. Turnbull and Gilkes scored MMI's only points in the match, but Smith, who had to retire leading 5-4 in the first set, and Pointer, who lost 10-7 in the third-set super tiebreaker, played well in defeat.
The Tigers return to action on Friday, October 7 to play the Warriors of East Central Community College in a 1:00 p.m. match in Decatur, MS.
