MMI Finishes as Runner-Up in ACCC Men’s Tennis Tournament
Albertville, AL—In what essentially amounted to two dual matches (the first against Coastal Alabama Community College-South and the second against Wallace State Community College-Hanceville), the Marion Military Institute Tigers' men's tennis team beat Coastal Alabama, 8-1, on Friday afternoon and lost to Wallace State, 9-0, on Saturday morning to take second place in the Alabama Community College Conference Men's Tennis Tournament.
On Friday, MMI knocked Coastal Alabama almost completely out of the tournament by racking up eight points to Coastal Alabama's one point. Joseph Tanjuatco led the charge by blanking Ian May, 6-0, 6-0, at first singles. In second singles, Eddie Hunter double-breadsticked Patrick Waggoner, 6-1, 6-1. Preston Smith, at No. 3 singles, avenged his two losses to Channing Townshend by winning in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4. Dom Ingram took out Cody Bonds at No. 4 singles, 6-2, 6-2. And Emmanuel Warner lost one more game (13 games to 14 games) but won one more set (6-4, 1-6, 6-4) than his opponent, Jonathan Akins, at No. 6 singles.
MMI won all three of Friday's doubles matches against Coastal Alabama (8-0, 8-2, and 8-3) to close out MMI's scoring for the day and for the tournament. Emmanuel Warner and Drake DelValle played spectacularly well in their 8-3 win at No. 3 doubles; they lost their only previous meeting, 5-8, to Coastal Alabama's Channing Townshend and Ethan Steed.
In MMI's match with Wallace State, Joseph Tanjuatco played brilliantly but came up just short of victory in his match against Sebastian Gamez, Wallace State's No. 1 player from Colombia, 6-6, 6-7 (7).
The men's tennis team finished its season with an overall record of 10-6 and an ACCC record of 4-2. Congratulations to the men's team on a fine season.
