Tigers Make Feathers Fly in 7-2 Defeat of Cardinals in Men’s Tennis
Marion, AL—With a trio of 8-6 doubles wins, the Marion Military Institute Tigers flew by the Gadsden State Community College Cardinals, 7-2, in Saturday afternoon's men's tennis match at the Paul B. Anderson Tennis Complex.
The Tigers escaped with three 8-6 wins in the doubles portion of the match. The No. 1 and No. 2 doubles teams played from behind in their matches and saved their best tennis for last. Blake Brown and Nathan Johnsen at No. 1 doubles and Dominique Ingram and Vance Llewellyn at No. 2 doubles came from behind to put up a pair of points for the Tigers. The No. 3 doubles team of Tom Chairs and Alex Matthews sprinted out to a 7-4 lead and then won the 14th and final game to give the Tigers a 3-0 lead going into singles play.
Brown, Chairs, Ingram, and Llewellyn produced four singles points for the Tigers. Brown (6-0, 6-1) and Chairs (6-2, 6-0) won relatively easy matches at No. 1 and No. 2 singles, respectively. Ingram at No. 3 singles and Llewellyn at No. 4 singles both won tiebreaker sets in their matches to secure their wins. Ingram downed Justin Blake, 6-3, 7-6 (2), and Llewellyn outlasted Rashon Sessoms, 7-6 (1), 6-3.
The Tigers will return to action on Saturday, February 23 when they travel to Meridian, MS, to play a doubleheader against Meridian Community College at 10:00 a.m. and Holmes Community College at 2:00 p.m. at the Northeast Park Tennis Center.
