Johnsen, Matthews, and Llewellyn Lead MMI Tigers to a 9-0 Shutout of Holmes CC Bulldogs

Meridian, MS—The MMI Tigers played the Holmes Community College Bulldogs at a neutral site, the Northeast Tennis Center, and came away with a 9-0 shutout.  Two extremely close matches—No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles—went the distance, with MMI prevailing in both matches.

MMI's No. 1 doubles team of Chris Lee/Kai Tougas and No. 2 doubles team of Isaiah Polk/Connor Higginbotham rolled to impressive 8-0 wins.

Quentin Llewellyn and Alex Matthews, MMI's remaining doubles pair, had a far more difficult go of it at No. 3 doubles.  They outlasted their Bulldog opponents, 9-7.  Clutch serving by Matthews and some solid net play by Llewellyn in the last game of the match sealed the deal for the Tigers.

Lee, Polk, Tougas, Higginbotham, and Llewellyn put up the next five points for the Tigers in relatively routine singles wins in singles slots 1 through 5.

However, Nathan Johnsen's match at No. 6 singles was anything but routine.  Johnsen captured the first set, 6-4, before losing the second-set tiebreaker, 7-9.  Johnsen rebounded nicely to take the third-set super tiebreaker, 10-6.  The final match score was 6-4, 6-7 (7), 10-6.

The MMI Tigers return to conference play when they visit Wallace State Community College for a 1:00 p.m. match in Hanceville, AL, on Wednesday, March 7.
