MMI’s Boussom Falls in Quarterfinals at ITA Southern Regional

Meridian, MS—MMI's Danny Boussom was on a collision course with the No. 1-seeded player in the 2017 ITA/Oracle Southern Regional Singles Championship, Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College's Travis Bell.  Their paths finally crossed in a quarterfinal match that lived up to its billing of being a hard-hitting, last-man-standing, and no-holds-barred kind of match.  Boussom lost the epic match, 4-6, 6-2, 6-4.  The showdown took place on Court 1 at the Northeast Tennis Center on Friday, September 22.

Boussom came out slugging in the first set, taking command of the set with his tremendous serve.  Bell returned the favor in the second set, taking command of that set with his tremendous quickness.  The third set boiled down to Boussom's tremendous serve versus Bell's tremendous quickness.  It also came down to stamina, cramps, toil, guts, and sweat.  Bell persevered with a 6-4 third-set win.

In other men's singles action for MMI, Isaiah Polk was handed a 6-3, 6-4 loss by Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College's No. 5-seeded Austin Vos, a big server from Australia.  Chris Lee was hammered 6-2, 6-1 by Hinds Community College's No. 3-seeded Carlos Trujillo, an experienced player from Colombia.  Connor Higginbotham lost a nicely played match to Will Swindoll of Meridian Community College, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3.

The Tigers return to action on Saturday, October 7, when they host Gadsden State Community College at the Paul B. Anderson Tennis Complex at 1:00 p.m.
