Men’s Tennis Competes Well in UWA’s USTA Campus Singles Challenge

Livingston, AL—The men's tennis team headed to the Vaughan Tennis Center on Saturday to compete in the University of West Alabama's USTA Campus Singles Challenge, a one-day event held at the Vaughan Tennis Center.  The Tigers competed well in the majority of their matches.  Chris Lee (4-1), Danny Boussom (2-1), Connor Higginbotham (2-2), Quentin Llewellyn (2-2), and Isaiah Polk (2-2) finished with records of .500 or better.  Kai Tougas, who had the toughest matches of the day, finished with a 2-3 record.  Three teams participated in the event:  Marion Military Institute (MMI), East Central Community College (ECCC), and the University of West Alabama (UWA). 

The Tigers had their fair share of success in the opening round of play, winning half of their eight matches.  Isaiah Polk and Danny Boussom both won their matches, 6-0, recording wins over Joseph Jabour (ECCC) and Gmontie Lewis (ECCC), respectively.  Quentin Llewellyn picked up his W with a 6-4 win over East Central's Alex Sumerall.  The highlight of first-round play, though, belonged to Kai Tougas.  Tougas edged East Central's Tom Langelaar in a well-played and entertaining match, 6-5 (3).

In other stellar action, Boussom defeated UWA's Andrii Stratiienko, 6-2; Polk lost two very close matches to UWA's Julius Kaverinen (6-4) and ECCC's Langelaar (6-5 [2]); Lee reeled off four consecutive wins (6-1, 6-2, 6-2, and 6-0) over opponents from ECCC; Higginbotham lost 6-3 to ECCC's Sam Mizzi; and Tougas lost to UWA's Nico Jachomowitz, 6-4.

The Tigers return to action when they travel to Meridian, MS, on Wednesday, September 13 to take on the Meridian Community College Eagles at the Northeast Tennis Center in a 1:00 p.m. match.
