Tigers Top Cardinals of Gadsden State, 6-3, in Men’s Tennis

Marion, AL—The Marion Military Institute Tigers held on for dear life at No. 2 doubles on Saturday afternoon at the Paul B. Anderson Tennis Complex to take two of the three doubles matches and then strung together four wins in the top four flights of singles to wrest the W from the visiting Gadsden State Community College Cardinals, 6-3.

After forfeiting the third doubles point and tallying the first point of the match with a relatively quick 8-2 win at first doubles, the Tigers found themselves dead even with the Cardinals with one point remaining to be claimed in the doubles portion of the match.

Andrew Carey and Harrison Foster came up big in the closing moments of their No. 2 doubles match to put the Tigers back in the lead going into singles play.  Carey and Foster survived, 9-7, to put the Tigers in a short-lived lead.

The Cardinals scored a forfeit win at No. 5 singles and snatched a quick win at No. 6 singles to reclaim the lead at 3-2.

The Tigers then went on a four-match scoring spree, with wins at No. 1 singles by Isaiah Polk, at No. 2 singles by Barry Booth, at No. 3 singles by Carey, and at No. 4 singles by Foster.

"I thought the boys, on the whole, played pretty well today," said Charles Wright, MMI's tennis coach.  "I was particularly impressed with the play of Harrison Foster.  That was probably the best match he has played since returning to the lineup.  He played a crisp, clean, smart match.  I was very happy for him and pleased with his performance."

The Tigers return to action on Thursday, Feb. 16.  They take on another conference foe, Faulkner State Community College, in a 1:00 p.m. home match.
