Marion Military Institute Clipped 5-4 by Meridian in Men’s Tennis

Meridian, MS—Marion Military Institute's men's tennis team faced an early 4-0 deficit after forfeiting two matches and losing both doubles matches to Meridian Community College at the Northeast Tennis Center on Friday afternoon, but instead of throwing in the towel, the team used the towel to wipe the sweat off its collective brow.  The team gallantly fought back and lost a close 5-4 decision.

Leading the comeback was Danny Boussom, MMI's No. 1 singles player.  Boussom defeated Jason Pimenta, the two-time ITA Southern JUCO Regional Singles Champion, 6-2, 6-4.

"I thought Danny played a tremendous match today against a tremendous player and competitor, Jason Pimenta," said head coach Charles Wright.  "When Danny's head is in the match and he's healthy, there aren't going to be too many players that are going to beat him.  Danny's serve alone will keep him in every match.  I knew as soon as Danny hit his serve on match point that that ball was going to be trouble for Pimenta, and it was—an ace down the T."

Also coming up big for MMI in singles play were Isaiah Polk (4-6, 6-0, 10-8), John Hunter (6-4, 6-4), and Andrew Carey (6-1, 6-3).

"Isaiah, John, and Andrew played some smart tennis," Wright said.  "They are true competitors.  They are all quiet and go about their business like true gentlemen.  It is such a pleasure to have them all on the team.  And Barry Booth, even though he lost 6-4, 6-4, played at a very high level and very competitively, too.  I can't say enough about the five boys that we have on the team.  They are the greatest kids."

That concludes MMI's fall season.  The Tigers will return to action on Saturday, January 28 when they take on Dalton State College in a 1:00 p.m. match at Lakeshore Park in Dalton, GA.
