Men’s Tennis Falls to Meridian Eagles, 6-3

Marion, AL—The Marion Military Institute Tigers put up quite the fight in yesterday afternoon's home tennis match with the Meridian Community College Eagles, losing in an extremely hard-fought battle, 6-3.

"All of the singles and doubles matches were incredibly close and competitive matches," said head tennis coach Charles Wright.  "I was very pleased with the overall performance of the team today.  If a few breaks had gone our way, we could have defeated a very stout Meridian squad."

The first and second doubles teams lost by two games apiece, and the third doubles team delivered MMI's first point of the afternoon when it won by two games.  The Tigers' No. 1 doubles team of Harrison Foster and Andrew Wright lost to Meridian's Jason Pimenta and Breno Goncalves, 8-6, and the Meridian pair of Walt Harrington and Samuel Butler nipped the Tiger tandem of Adam Bahney and Max Holloway, 9-7.  Blake McDonald and Xavier Bell thwarted a doubles sweep by Meridian with their 8-3 win at third doubles.

In singles play, Andrew Wright downed Noah James, 7-6 (3), 6-3, and Xavier Bell defeated Samuel Butler, 6-2, 6-4, to claim MMI's last points of the day.

Three of the four remaining singles matches for MMI were lost in tiebreakers.  MMI's Foster lost his match in a second-set tiebreaker, and Ben Lee and Holloway lost their matches in third-set super tiebreakers.

The Tigers return to the courts for an away match with East Central Community College in Decatur, MS, on Saturday, Feb. 13.  First serves fly at 11:00 a.m.
