Two Tiger Tandems Finish with 1-2 Records at National Small College Doubles Championship
Sumter, SC—The top two doubles teams from Marion Military Institute (Harrison Foster/Andrew Wright and Adam Bahney/Max Holloway) played a total of three matches each over a two-day span at the National Small College Doubles Championship and came away with identical 1-2 records. Both teams wound up beating Meridian's Jason Pimenta and Sam Butler, who filled in for an American River College duo at the last minute.
Bahney and Holloway lost their first- and second-round matches at the Palmetto Tennis Center in straight sets, losing 6-0, 6-1 to Tyler Junior College's Ferren Calvo and Enrique Pardo and 6-3, 6-1 to Seminole State College's Chisomo Lumeta and Innocent Tidimane. Bahney and Holloway rebounded from those two losses and claimed 7th place in the eight-team field by downing Meridian Community College's Pimenta and Butler, 6-3, 6-4.
Wright and Foster suffered two losses, as well, with their lone win sandwiched between the two defeats. Their two setbacks came at the quick hands of the No. 4-seeded team of Nicolas Rouanet and Eric Ahren-Moonga of ASA College Miami (6-3, 6-0) and Seminole State's Lumeta and Tidimane (6-3, 6-3). Foster and Wright squeezed by the Meridian pair of Pimenta and Butler, 6-3, 4-6, 10-7, to finish the tournament in 6th place.
"The doubles competition was fierce and unbelievable," head coach Charles Wright said. "The quality and level of play of the eight-team field was off the charts. I believe, with the exception of one player from Meridian, one player from Ventura, and our two doubles teams, the entire junior college doubles field was comprised of all international and semipro-caliber players."
