Andrew “Tyler” Cobb Named Head Men’s and Women’s Tennis Coach at Montreat College

Montreat, NC—Former Tiger tennis standout Andrew "Tyler" Cobb has recently been named Head Men's and Women's Tennis Coach at Montreat College in Montreat, NC.

In making the announcement, Montreat College Athletic Director Jose Larios said, "I'm thrilled to have Coach Cobb join our Montreat College athletic family.  His role at Reinhardt University was paramount to their success in the past few years.  We expect he will bring great energy and focus to our men's and women's tennis program."

"Tyler was one of my first recruits when we started the men's tennis program in the 2008-2009 school year," said MMI head tennis coach Charles Wright.  "I remember trying to persuade Tyler to sign on at MMI.  He was a tough fish to land.  I must have called him a thousand times before he finally answered his phone.  Tyler jokes now that he should never have answered the phone on that thousand and first time.

"He was a big kid with tremendous power and feather-like touch.  He could pummel the tar out of the ball and then turn around and caress the ball on a dime.  His drop shots were phenomenal.  And for a big guy, he had cat-like quickness.  I remember seeing him play in actual match play for the first time at the ITA Regional tournament.  Tyler's opponent hit a nice drop shot, and Tyler anticipated the shot and began moving quickly to the net.  He plastered that ball for a winner.  I still—to this day—can't believe he hit that shot."

After leading the Marion Military Institute men's team to its highest national finish (#13) in the 2009-2010 season and earning his A.S. degree from MMI in 2010, Cobb moved on to play at Reinhardt University,  During his senior year, Cobb played No. 1 singles and doubles for the Eagles.  He earned his B.S. in Business Administration from Reinhardt University in 2013.

Cobb continued his academic and athletic career at Reinhardt University for two additional years, becoming the school's Graduate Assistant Tennis Coach while completing coursework for his MBA degree in 2015. 

"I'd like to personally congratulate Tyler on his first college tennis coaching job," Wright said.  "I will always remember Tyler fondly for being a great team player and for always being loyal to me and to our team.  Montreat College hired a great young man to lead its tennis program."
