Men’s Tennis Leads Stillman College, 2-0, and Women’s Tennis Trails Stillman College, 4-1, in Rain-Postponed Matches

Marion, AL—In rain-shortened matches, the MMI Tigers took a 2-0 lead over the Stillman College Tigers and the Stillman College Lady Tigers, with the aid of three defaulted matches, led 4-1 over the MMI Lady Tigers before the deluge struck around 4:30 p.m.

The MMI Lady Tigers split the two doubles matches played.  At No. 1 doubles, MMI's talented twosome of Carlee Conway and Maria Cespedes knocked off Stillman College's Carolina Barabas and Nair Tolomeo, 8-4.  On court 2, Stillman College's Rosana Mederios and Maria Andreeva blanked MMI's Shikiria Franklin and Selah Cho, 8-0.

On the men's side, MMI's Kaiser De Leon and Javier de Claire picked up wins at No. 1 and No. 5 singles, respectively.  De Leon bounced Joan Sanson, 6-3, 6-1, and de Claire duplicated that score in downing Fernando Garcia.

On court 2, Morgan Hale was on the brink of winning the match, leading 6-3, 5-4 over Stillman's Alejandro Fernandez when the rain abruptly stopped the match.

Three other men's matches were also stopped in midstream:  MMI's Andrew Wright held a one-set-to-none lead on Stillman's Yonwaba Pupuma; Wright won the opening set, 6-1, but trailed in the second, 1-0.  MMI's Patrick Ryder dropped the first set, 6-3, to Stillman's Jose Pojasi but was ahead in the second, 5-3.  And MMI's Marty Birchmeier and Stillman's Eddie Symmonett were still in the first few games of the opening set before rain interrupted play, with Birchmeier leading 2-1.

The rain-postponed contest will be completed at a later date and site to be determined.

The Tigers now take to the road for a conference match with Gadsden State Community College in Gadsden, AL, on Saturday, March 28.  The match is slated to start at 1 p.m.

The Lady Tigers will also go on the road for their next match.  They will play a conference match with Faulkner State Community College on Tuesday, March 31 at 1:00 p.m. in Bay Minette, AL.
