Men’s Tennis Scores a Rare Double Eagle with Wins over Meridian CC and Hinds CC

Meridian, MS—The men's tennis team downed a pair of Eagles on Saturday afternoon at the Northeast Tennis Center, defeating the Meridian Community College Eagles, 6-3, in the first match and the Hinds Community College Eagles in the second match, 7-2.

In the Meridian match, the Tigers squeaked out a three-set win at No. 1 doubles when Romar Hernandez and Jake McDonough, after splitting the first two sets, 6-3, 4-6, roared away with the super tiebreaker, 10-1.  MMI's Kaiser De Leon and Javier de Claire defeated Reed Wade and TJ Carter, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 2 doubles.  Meridian tallied its lone doubles point at No. 3 doubles.

In singles action, De Leon, Hernandez, McDonough, and de Claire supplied four more points for the Tiger cause.  In the closest match of the afternoon, MMI's Marty Birchmeier fell in three sets to Meridian's Christian Jackson, 6-1, 2-6, 10-8.

In the Hinds match, the Tigers won two doubles matches (No. 1 doubles with Hernandez/McDonough and No. 2 doubles with De Leon/Birchmeier) and five singles matches (De Leon, Hernandez, McDonough, de Claire, and Birchmeier) to best Hinds, 7-2.

The Tigers return to the courts to face Stillman College on Sunday, Feb. 16.  The home match has a 1:30 p.m. start time.
