Baseball Wins 3 of 4 against Calhoun

The Marion Military Institute baseball team defeated Calhoun CC three out of four games last weekend to improve their ACCC North record to 5-3.

Game 1: MMI 3 Calhoun 6

MMI lost the first game of the four-game series with sophomore Devne Daniel leading at the plate.  The sophomore left fielder went 2-for-3 with a run scored.  David Sweat, Matthew Marfice, Jonathan Johnson amd Nicholas Davis also had hits in the loss.  Freshman Jax Morris took the loss from the mound.  In four innings of work, he gave up four hits, five runs (four earned), and three walks while striking out five batters.  Jensen Barker and Garrett Ellis also saw action in relief.

Game 2: MMI 5 Calhoun 3

The Tigers scored two runs in the top half of the eighth inning and sophomore Marquez Oates kept the Calhoun batters silent in their last at-bat to take game two Friday afternoon.

Bradley Brown started on the mound for Marion and worked three innings.  He allowed three runs (one earned) with three hits and three walks while striking out four batters.  Weston Ball and Coleton Barnes worked in relief.

Devne Daniel went 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI at the plate to lead Marion's offense.  Drew Mercier and Nicholas Davis each had two hits; Davis scored once and Mercier twice.  David Sweat, Matthew Marfice, and Michael Pittmon also had hits in the win.

Game 3: MMI 6 Calhoun 5

After getting down 5-1, the MMI Tigers scored five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to take a one-run lead into the final inning.  Sophomore hurler Marquez Oates was once again able to silence the Calhoun bats and earned the save.  Freshman Jensen Barker got the win after relieving freshmen James Smith and Weston Ball.

David Sweat had two hits with an RBI and a run scored for MMI.  Devne Daniel went 1-for-1; he had a homerun, an RBI, and was walked three times. Jonathan Johnson, Cole Beck, Duncan McReath and Michael Pittmon also recorded hits for Marion.

Game 4: MMI 8 Calhoun 4

Marquez Oates was once again called into action on the mound for the Tigers, this time as a starter.  He worked 3.2 innings, giving up six hits and three runs (two earned) with a strikeout.  Riley Spearman and Jensen Barker saw action in relief with Barker earning the save.

Devne Daniel continued his hot bat, going 3-for-3 with two runs scored, an RBI and a walk.  Jonathan Johnson added two hits in four at-bats with a double, a triple, two RBI and a run scored.  Matthew Marfice, MMI's first baseman, finished 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI.  

Also collecting hits for Marion were: David Sweat, Michael Rich, Nicholas Davis, Samuel Clement, and Duncan McReath.

 

MMI will host Snead State CC this Thursday as they start another four-game series against the Parsons.  First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. at the Scott G. Davis Stadium.
