Baseball Earns Two DH Split on Road Trip

The MMI baseball team earned two wins on a recent road trip to South Alabama; splitting doubleheaders with Bishop State CC and Coastal Alabama CC-East.  The two wins improved MMI's record to 7-3 overall.  Their next scheduled game is at Faulkner University Wednesday, February 20, with a 12:00 p.m. start.

Game 1:  MMI 1 Bishop State 4

The Tigers were only able to manufacture two hits in game one of a doubleheader at Bishop State Community College.  David Sweat and Matthew Marfice each collected a hit while Samuel Clement scored their lone run.

Bradley Brown took the loss from the mound.  In 1.2 innings, he gave up six hits and four runs.  Weston Ball and Nathan Colegrove worked in relief.  Ball threw 3.1 innings, giving up three hits while striking out four batters.  In one inning, Colegrove gave up one hit and struck out two.

Game 2: MMI 4  Bishop State 1

Marion reversed game one's score to take the second game of the doubleheader.  Jax Morris earned his second win of the season.  In four innings, he gave up one hit, one run and five walks while striking out  three Wildcat hitters.  Riley Spearman earned his first save of the spring, giving up two hits in three innings of work.

Cole Beck recorded an RBI and finished with two hits in four plate appearances.  David Sweat, Jonathan Johnson, and Weston Ball also had hits in the win.

Game 3: MMI 2 Coastal Alabama CC-East 0

Matthew Marfice and Devne Daniel scored both runs for Marion with homeruns and freshman James Smith threw a complete game to improve his record to 2-0.  Smith allowed four hits, no runs, and one walk with three strikeouts.

Game 4: MMI 8 Coastal Alabama CC-East 9

Marion scored four runs in the first inning to take an early lead but the Warhawks answered with two in the bottom half of the inning to cut the lead in half.  The home team added four more runs in the second inning and three in the third to take a commanding 9-4 lead.  The Tigers were able to add two runs in the fourth and sixth innings.

Sophomore Marquez Oates took the loss for MMI while Coleton Barnes, Michael Pittmon, Garrett Ellis, and Jenson Barker all saw action in relief. 

David Sweat led Marion with four hits and a run scored.  Cole Beck and Jonathan Johnson each went 3-for-4 at the plate with an RBI and two runs scored.  Devne Daniel added two hits in five at-bats with two RBI.  Andrew Valero also had two hits, a double, a walk, and RBI and scored a run.  Samuel Clement and Drew Mercier also had hits in the loss.
