Tigers Earn Sweep of WCC at Home

Marion, AL. - The MMI baseball team earned a sweep Saturday afternoon at home against Wallace Community College - Selma. 

Game 1: MMI 4 WCC 1

Sophomore hurler, Marquez Oates (2-0), earned his second win of the season defeating the Patriots of WCC 4-1.  In six innings of work, he allowed no hits, no runs, and two walks while striking out six batters.  Michael Pittmon work an inning in relief.  He allowed no hits, one run, and one base on balls.

Marion scored two runs in the second inning before adding two more in the fifth inning to take a 4-0 lead.  Wallace CC scored their only run in the seventh inning.  Jonathan Johnson and Matthew Marfice led the offensive attack for MMI, each with two hits in three at-bats.  Marfice scored a run and earned a walk while Johnson doubled and recorded an RBI.

David Sweat went 1-for-3 with a run, an RBI, and a walk.  Drew Mercier finished with a hit in one official at-bat with one run scored.  Michael Rich and Seth Shadix both got a hit in three plate appearances.

Game 2: MMI 15 WCC 6

Marion plated four runs in their first at-bat to take a quick 4-0 lead.  The Patriots fought back and scored three in the second inning, and two more in the fourth to take a 5-4 lead.  MMI's offense came alive and they took the lead back in the bottom half of the sixth inning when they crossed home plate six times.  They added two more runs in the fifth inning and three in the sixth inning to take a commanding 15-6 lead.  Wallace CC couldn't manufacture any more runs, and the Tigers improved to 5-1.

Freshman Jax Morris (1-0) earned his first win of the spring after relieving freshman Cameron Smith.  In three innings of work, Morris allowed two hits, one run and one walk while striking out four Patriot hitters.  Nathan Colegrove also saw action on the mound for Marion.  He surrendered one hit and a walk in one inning of work.

David Sweat and Devne Daniel each collcted three hits for Marion.  Sweat scored four times for the Tigers and had one RBI.  Daniel had a double, recorded four RBI, and scored once.  Michael Rich went 2-for-3 with four RBI and a run scored.  Matthew Marfice and Jonathan Johnson each had two hits in four plate appearances.  Marfice had two RBI, one walk, stole a base and finished with two RBI.  Johnson also scored a run and recorded three RBI.  Also getting hits for MMI were: Drew Mercier, Seth Sahdix, Weston Ball, and Duncan McReath.

MMI will travel to play at Bishop State Community College Thursday, February 14 for a non-conference match-up.  First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
