Baseball Opens Spring Season with Two Wins

Selma, AL. - The MMI baseball team started the 2019 season with two wins at ACCC South foe Wallace Community College - Selma.

Game 1:  MMI 9  WCC 3

The Tigers scattered 16 hits on their way to a win in game one of a doubleheader at Wallace Community College in Selma.    Freshman Michael Rich led Marion with three hits, including a double, in four at-bats.  He scored once and had two RBI.  David Sweat went 2-for-3 at the plate with a triple.  He scored three runs and recorded an RBI.  Cole Beck, Weston Ball, and Duncan McReath each finished with two hits in four plate appearances.    Matthew Marfice also had two hits for MMI, including a homerun.  The Tiger's left fielder scored twice and had a team high three RBI.  Also collecting hits for Marion were: Devne Daniel, Christian Wright, and Samuel Clement.

James Smith (1-0) pitched four innings and earned the win; his first as a freshman.  He allowed one hit and two walks while striking out five WCC batters.  Also seeing action on the mound were Jax Morris, Jarrett Carter, and Jensen Barker.

Game 2: MMI 7 WCC 1

Marion scored four runs in the second inning before adding two more in the fifth and one in the sixth inning to claim the win in game two of Saturday's doubleheader.  Wallace scored their lone run in the fourth inning.  Sophomore Marquez Oates (1-0) earned the win for the Tigers.  In five innings, he allowed three hits, one run, and one walk while striking out six batters.  Michael Pittmon threw two innings in relief allowing two hits, no runs, and just one walk. 

Freshman Andrew Valero went 2-for-2 at the plate with an RBI and a stolen base.  David Sweat conrinued to swing a hot bat for MMI, going 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI.  He also scored one run.  Michael Rich finished with two hits in three plate appearances, scoring a run.  Also collecting hits were Duncan McReath, Matthew Marfice, Devne Daniel, Christian Wright, Weston Ball, Seth Shadix, and Nicholas Davis.

MMI (2-0) will travel to Mobile, Alabama Tuesday, February 2, to face Springhill College in a doubleheader.
