Marion Sweeps Doubleheader from Roane State CC

The MMI Tigers earned two more wins Saturday afternoon, sweeping a doubleheader from Roane State Community College.

Game 1: MMI 5 Roane State CC 4

Freshman Blake Teel started on the mound for Marion in game one of the doubleheader.  The first inning had both teams threaten but unable to cross the plate.  The second inning saw Marion put four runs on the board. After Chase Hamrick struck out, Sophomore Steven Ward was hit by a pitch to start the rally.  Justin Bisharat hit a double to short left field which put runners on second and third.  Jackson Cofer put down a perfect squeeze bunt and scored Ward for the first run of the game.  Cofer was safe at first on the play.  Alex Reyna was hit by a pitch and loaded the bases for Jonah Todd.  Todd earned a walk and scored Bisharat.  Samuel Farley got a base hit to left field and scored two runs.

The Raiders remained scoreless until the fourth inning.  With one out, Teel gave up a double to right center field to the Raider's second batter.  He was able to strike out the next batter before an error at second got the fourth batter on base.  The next batter hit a three run home run over the left field fence to get the Raiders to within one run.

The Tigers kept the lead until the top of the seventh inning when the Raiders scored one run to tie the game. In the bottom of the inning, Samuel Farley got a base hit and got into scoring position after he stole second base.  Carson McGregory hit a shot to right field and scored Farley to secure the victory.

Game 2: MMI 2 Roane State CC 1

Sophomore Austin Anderson got the start for Marion in game two of the doubleheader.  The Raiders from Roane State took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning after the second batter hit a triple to left field.  The next Raider hitter got a bloop single to center field and scored the runner.  The Tigers remained down a run until the fourth inning.

Samuel Farley led off the inning with a single to centerfield.  A balk allowed Farley to advance to second.  Steven Ward hit a stand up triple to score Farley.  Blake Teel hit a deep fly ball to left field and Ward was able to score the go ahead run. 

Chad Robinson came in to pitch in relief in the sixth inning and held the Raiders scoreless.  Roane State posed a threat in the top of the seventh after the second  batter hit a triple to left field.  With a Raider base runner in scoring position, Head Coach Matt Downs went to sophomore Gabe Nevala to close out the game.  Nevala struck out the first batter he faced and then got the next hitter to hit to the Marion's first basemen for the third and final out.

Marion (3-1) will travel to Selma, AL Saturday afternoon for a 12:00/2:00 doubleheader against the Patriots from Wallace State Community College.
